Zhenhua Yu (于振华)
Bio
Dr Zhenhua Yu is currently an Assistant Professor (Lecturer) at the University of Aberdeen , UK, and also an Honorary Lecturer in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Imperial College London. He is the Director of the Multimodal Intelligent Robotics Lab and also serves as Co-Director of the University of Aberdeen–South China Normal University Joint Laboratory for Multimodal Intelligent Robotics.
Before this, he received his PhD degree in Robotics & Artificial Intelligence from the Dyson School of Design Engineering at Imperial College London in 2023, under the supervision of Prof. Peter Childs FREng and Prof. Thrishantha Nanayakkara .
Before joining the University of Aberdeen in November 2024, Dr Zhenhua Yu worked as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Imperial College London, working with Prof. Ravi Vaidyanathan in the Biomechatronics Lab.
The aim of our research group is to develop hybrid intelligent robotics and wearable device systems that can interact with the physical world safely and robustly. We hope to prototype novel AI-enabled healthcare robotics systems for research, education, collaboration, and ultimately, commercialisation.

Research interests
The rapid growth of ageing populations, together with increasing pressure on healthcare systems and shortages of medical resources, has highlighted the urgent need for advanced bioelectronic devices that support decentralised and personalised healthcare.
These technologies include wearable healthcare devices, minimally invasive biosensors, implantable electrodes, closed-loop smart sensing systems, and brain-inspired soft hardware. Our research focuses on developing hybrid intelligent robotics and wearable systems that can safely and robustly interact with humans and the physical world.
- Conducting fundamental research to develop soft, wearable, and implantable bioelectronic sensors, e-skins, and soft robotics
- Developing advanced neuromorphic computation and bioelectronic systems for AI-enabled healthcare robotics
- Embedded AI, robotic perception, and navigation for human-centric digital healthcare
